Call to find out more about our Vertigo Management

Vertigo Management

Vertigo can be a symptom of many different inner ear disorders, so it is important to consult a physician for a proper diagnosis. Depending on the cause, there are different ways to manage vertigo. For example, if you have Ménière’s disease, you might be prescribed diuretics to reduce fluid in the inner ear. If you have a benign positional vertigo (BPV), your doctor may prescribe physical therapy exercises that help your body get used to the sensation of movement. If you have labyrinthitis, your doctor might prescribe antibiotics.

Home Vertigo Treatment

If you are experiencing occasional dizziness, home treatment can help. Try to get plenty of rest and avoid stressful situations. Eat a healthy diet, and avoid caffeine and alcohol. If you have a viral infection, taking over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen may help with the pain and inflammation. Home remedies such as ginger tea or ginger capsules can also be helpful in reducing nausea and vomiting. You can also try placing a cold compress on your forehead or behind your neck to help with the dizziness and nausea. Getting up slowly from lying down or sitting can also help to avoid dizziness or lightheadedness.

When to See a Doctor

If you experience vertigo that is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, headache, or slurred speech, you should see a doctor right away. These symptoms can indicate a more serious condition, such as a stroke. If you experience dizziness or lightheadedness that is severe or lasts for more than a few days, you should also see a doctor.

Prevention

You can help prevent some types of vertigo by avoiding activities that put you at risk for inner ear damage, such as exposure to loud noises or head injuries. Wearing seat belts while driving and using a helmet while riding a bike can help to prevent head injuries.
